A Multi-sensory Portrait of F. Fomentarius (2025)
film installation
super8,
projector, 35mm and mid-format film, bioplastic foil
‘A Multisensory Portrait of F. Fomentarius’, explores how film can create affect beyond visual sensation through multi-sensory responses and haptic visuality.
A specimen of
Fomes fomentarius
becomes both image and chemistry, its fungal molecules infecting volatile developing agents, creating relational entanglements between matter, image, and viewer.
35mm and mid-format frames are encased in a pungent, fungal bioplastic ‘skin’, infesting air with its unique stench while a super8 loop displays the temporamental traces of a chemical solution that resists human control. The work invites the audience to experience non-human presence through scent, feel, texture, and the ghostly artifacts of collaborative material agents.
